Types of Data Collected

Personal Data

Jargon Vault does not require users to submit personal data for basic use. However, when using the Service with a custom CouchDB instance, certain configuration data may be stored locally to enhance usability. This includes:

  • CouchDB database URL
  • Vault name or identifier
  • Username (if applicable)
  • UI preferences (e.g., theme settings, layout choices)

Jargon Vault does not collect or transmit sensitive personal data.

Cookies and Session Data

If you connect to CouchDB using session-based authentication, a cookie is used to store the session token securely in your browser. This cookie:

  • Is only accessible to your local browser
  • Is never transmitted to external servers or third-party services
  • Exists only to maintain an authenticated session with your CouchDB instance

Usage Data

We do not collect usage data on how you use the extension or what pages you visit. The extension runs entirely on your device and interacts only with your specified CouchDB database.

How We Use Your Information

The data Jargon Vault handles is used only for the following purposes:

  • To display definitions for highlighted jargon
  • To streamline your connection to a configured CouchDB instance
  • To maintain your preferred UI settings
  • To keep you logged in during an active session (when applicable)

We do not transmit, resell, or analyze user data or session logs.

User Responsibility for Vault Security

When using a self-hosted CouchDB instance, users are fully responsible for securing their data. This includes:

  • Enabling authentication and HTTPS
  • Setting up appropriate user roles and permissions
  • Restricting access with network-level security (VPN, firewall, etc)

Jargon Vault serves only as a frontend client and does not enforce or validate security on your database instance.

Third-Party Vaults

If you choose to connect to publicly shared or third-party-hosted vaults, you do so at your discretion. Jargon Vault does not validate or monitor the content or security of third-party CouchDB instances

We recommend reviewing any external vault’s data structure, policies, and hosting environment before use.

Data Retention

Jargon Vault stores configuration and UI preference data locally in your browser for your convenience. No user data is stored on any external server or cloud system by default.

You may clear this data at any time by resetting the extension or removing it from your browser.

Children’s Privacy

Jargon Vault does not knowingly collect information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided personal data, please contact us and we will remove it promptly.

Links to Other Websites

The extension may display links to resources or documentation hosted externally (e.g., our support site). We are not responsible for the privacy practices or content of third-party websites.

Security of Your Personal Data

While we do not store personal data ourselves, we encourage users to follow best practices when self-hosting CouchDB or using any form of authentication. We strive to keep your experience secure, but no method of storage or transmission is 100% secure.

Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Changes will be published through the extension interface or via our website. Your continued use of the Service constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.
